History Of The Australian Dollar

Most of us know that the Australian dollar replaced the pound sterling in 1965, but what may not be so well known or remembered are the names that were suggested for it, some of which were quite whacky. Can you imagine paying one emu, two diggers or three australs when you go to purchase anything? Australians also had a lucky escape from being lugged with currency names such as the ming, the kwid or the dinkum, amongst others just as inappropriate.

Finally the name for our new currency was settled as the royal, but that name was dropped at the last minute when common sense at last prevailed and we ended up with the Australian dollar. How lucky can you get? However, the actual Australian dollar coin was not seen for another twenty-odd years. The first dollars were made of paper, but they were replaced by Australian dollar coins in 1984, while the two-dollar coins came into being four years later.

When it first came into being the value of the Australian dollar exactly matched that of the British pound, even though international currency was actually pegged to the value of the US dollar. This reflected our historical ties with Britain as well as the view of the stability of the pound sterling.

But in December of 1983 things changed; the Australian dollar was floated, so its value then rose and fell - along with other international currencies  depending on the international money market. Its lowest value since then was in April 2001 when its value sank to just 47.75 US. The highest it has ever been was on the 15 July 2008 when its value reached 98.49 US cents.
