Does the 1964 JFK Half Dollar have the two-colored edge?
I live in Ecuador and as we use dollars I got a 1964 JFK Half Dollar but I don't know how to know whether or not it's false. We use to see the edge of the coin (two-colored in half dollars) but I realized this is a different coin (because of the year and the heads) and I don't know if this version has to have the edge as described...
Nope. Maybe I explained wrong...
The obverse has the JFK profile portrait and the reverse has the President's Seal, just like present-day half dollar coins.
The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar, from the USA, was minted in 90% silver and 10% copper. These two metals are alloyed - "blended together" - and the end result is a metal with a uniformly silver color.
Starting in 1971, Kennedy halves were minted in a copper-nickel clad, where outer layers of copper-nickel were bonded to a copper core. Their copper core can be readily seen as a reddish strip or band on their edges.
In contrast, the 1964 halves are entirely silver-colored, and don't have that reddish band on their edges.
Some background on the 1971-on halves:
http://www.tulving.com/50ckenn.html
"... a bill was finally passed near the end of 1970 which called for the coining of half dollars in the same composition used since 1965 for the dime and quarter: two outer layers of copper and nickel bonded to an inner core of pure copper. From 1971 onward, the Kennedy half dollar would bear the red edge which had already become familiar to Americans ..."
Finally, there's a third category of Kennedy halves, minted from 1965 to 1969 for general circulation, and in 1970 mint and proof sets, which were silver-clad. These halves contain 40% silver, where the silver was clad to a copper core. From what I recall, the reddish copper clad layer is usually *not* visible on the edges of the silver-clad coins - their edges are silver-colored, much like those of the 1964 silver halves.
