What are some good magic tricks for a talent show?
I'm getting prepared for a talent show next year when I am graduating middle school. I wanna go out with a big bang. ![]()
I wanna do some magic tricks. What tricks do you recommend? Could you tell me how to do it? What song should I play during the magic trick? I'll be doing the trick on the stage, so I don't prefer small magic tricks. I am also pretty on a tight budget, so I can't buy anything expensive. Thanks
My first statement would be that you should be doing something at a talent show that is already a talent of yours. I see far too many people in my magic store looking to perform magic for a talent show and they've never done magic at all.
If you already do magic and are looking for something that would work from stage, I would suggest rope tricks are inexpensive but play very large. The same goes for Linking Rings. If you're performing for a large crowd, I would suggest at least 8" rings, but 10" or 12" would be even better.
If you are up to making props, check out the back of Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic for instructions on making several larger props that would suit your purpose.
As to the proper music, etc....there is so much that goes into putting together an act. Remember, the magic is in you not in the wand. You wouldn't want someone else picking out your clothes - especially not someone who doesn't know you. Why would you allow someone you don't know to pick out your tricks or dress your act? You might want to talk to someone at school who is into music for suggestions. Think about how long the music needs to run. Are you doing magic through it? What are you doing the rest of the time?
I use a song from an old 70s Broadway musical in my show. The piece normally runs about three and a half minutes. I had it tweaked to run just under three. The first minute, I'm not doing magic. I'm establishing a character and a story. There are then a couple of bits of magic that advance my story. Then a little more story by itself. Then finally a huge moment of magic. While I started performing it about 4 years ago, it took about three of those years to refine everything to a point that I'm happy with.

Magic is everywhere, from the big spectacle celebrity of David Copperfield and Siegfried and Roy to the quirky Penn and Teller to the spooky David Blaine and Criss Angel to the endless material on YouTube. But until now, learning it has never been easy—that's all about to change with Magic, a book that does for close-up magic what How to Grill does for barbecue. Written by charismatic young magician Joshua Jay, Magic combines expertise, photographs, step-by-step directions showing how to perform 100 tricks, and a DVD that demonstrates 35 of them. Joshua Jay took home the top prize at the World Magic Seminar (the Olympics of magic) when he was just 16 years old. Ten years later, he continues to perform magic, write about magic, eat, sleep, and breathe magic. Here, he brings all his passion and knowledge to teaching magic. Each trick is broken down into the Effect, the Secret, the Set-up, and, most important, the Performance, with lessons on what to say, how to direct the audience's attention, where to keep your hands, and so on. (In other words, how to be smart about the things your audience is surprisingly clueless about.) Here are the Ten Greatest Card Tricks; tricks to dazzle a dinner date; tricks to perform for the boss (poke a hole through his shirt, then magically mend it); tricks especially for kids; and even tricks for an audience in another state—with "Australian Self-Help," you can find a participant's chosen card over the phone. It's the Aha! book for a subject whose time has come. |
